Celebrating Arab Water Day 2021

Every year on March 3, the Arab world celebrates Water Day. The slogan for this year was “Save water for sustainability”.

The annual celebration of Arab Water Day on March 3 is a means to raise awareness about the sustainability of water resources. It is essentially a call to the community to work towards ensuring the sustainability of water resources in the Arab world. This day also serves as a significant reminder of the importance of water resources in sustaining human life.

Saudi Arabia is the world’s third largest consumer of water, after the USA and Canada. In 2019, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia launched the ‘Qatrah’ initiative to conserve water resources and reduce its consumption. The program has been designed carefully to ensure that by 2022, water consumption in the Kingdom is reduced by 24%. The program aims to manage water demand, distribution and treatment to meet the city’s requirements as efficiently as possible.

The Royal Commission of Riyadh proposes to reuse 100% of the wastewater generated by the city. By working on a smart water piping system, water leakage can be reduced almost up to 8%. Establishing a zero-tolerance policy towards water leakage will surely go a long way in preserving the city’s water resources for future generations. A water efficiency labelling scheme is expected to be introduced for appliances and fittings to encourage consumers to buy water efficient products. The Commission also desires to reduce water consumption to 150 litres per day per person.

To achieve the goals set in the Kingdom’s National Water strategy 2030, The Royal Commission of Riyadh will be collaborating with relevant authorities for effective management of the city’s resources, ensuring that our future generation doesn’t suffer the consequences of water shortage.
